iPod 4th Generation Dissection
and white click-wheel

I have a bad habit: taking everything apart.
I had owned my iPod for less then a week when I decided to crack it open for modding.
First off, I am a skilled technician and computer modifier, DO NOT attempt to open your iPod if you don't know what you are doing.
I am not responsible for any damage to your iPod.

The iPod is of course very well built and designed, everything fits perfectly with each other.
The metal shell has micro-welded mounts, and the white shell had two layers, a clear layer and white layer.
They unfortunately cannot be separated.
The inside of the click wheel is my favorite, with a swirl of metal contacts.

The LCD caught my interest after rumors that it may be color capable, due to the ability to turn all the pixels the blue.
This is not true however, a dissection of the LCD shows why.
First note the blue at the edges of the LCD

First off the three backlight LEDs are VERY white.

This image doesn't do them justice, but they are very bright and have no blue-tilt to them.

Separating the LCD we can see the silver looking defuser.

So why blue? It's the liquid inside the LCD.
Here I am holding the LCD up against a halogen light.
This also means that any LED color change will still have to compete with the blue tint.

One reason I opened my iPod is to change the gray clickwheel to white.
The wheel is 0.84mm thick, or the same as a credit card.
I have some used plastic sheeting that is 0.86mm thick that I plan to use to make a prototype white click wheel. More on that later.

The new click wheel is not quite a white, due the poor quality plastic I used.
I plan on making a new one using higher quality plastic, and making the wheel a different color.
