Lighted Wireless Headphones

I couldn't modify the wireless transmitter without modding the headphones also.
LED lights seemed perfect for the job.

The headset is a Optimus (RadioShack) headset.
Actually the sound is VERY good, and well constructed.

On each side is metal grill, perfect for out light to shine through.

But once I opened the headset, I found that the grill is just for show.
Well I can fix that...

As you can see the grill is just held in place by four bends of metal

Once removed we can get to work.

Using a Dremel with a drill bit worked out well

Perfect hole! Now just put the grill back in place, and bend the metal holders.

Now for the electronics

Interestingly these headphones use a AM/FM Radio Chip.
The IR signal must be modulated on an FM frequency.

The right and left speaker are similar, and tracing ground, and +3 volts was pretty easy.

The LED is wired up to a 33ohm resistors.
At 3.3 volts this will limit the LED to 20mA, so in total I have only added 40mA to the headset.
I have not noticed a drop in volume, quality, or battery life.
Although the LED' do dim when the batteries start getting low

In the end you end up with a pretty sweet wireless headset!
