Results of Super Partitioning

-Intro- -How-To-

First off here is my current drive setup.

I have three physical harddrives in my system, split up into 7 Partitions

SYSTEM C:\

The first is my system partitions, this contains windows AND only windows!

Since this drive only uses 1.7 gigs it only takes 3 CD's to back it up!

In less than 20 minutes of CD burning I can have a total back-up of windows!

(None of these drives have been defragmented in 6 months.)

As you can see windows is very well kept, it have very little chance of getting fragmented. Keeping your system running fast.

The Program Files folder on System (C:\) has been replaced with a mounted NTFS Folder.

(Remember the how-to is later in the guide)

Mounting a NTFS folder makes any programs that ignore the registry, and read or write from "C:\Program Files",  automatically re-route to the Programs Partition, making this hack seamless and easy to use.

PROGRAMS D:\

The Program drive contains anything that would normally go into the "C:\Program Files" Folder.

Programs can either be installed to "D:\" or "C:\Program Files"

Either way the files will end up here and nowhere else.

This drive is also very organized and barely fragmented

MEDIA E:\

The "C:\My Documents" Folder is replaced by the Media Drive E:

This drive contains my Movies, Music, Web Pages, Pictures, Any multimedia files I want.

A registry edit makes sure any programs are routed to here.

I suppose you could also mount a drive, but I didn't find this necessary.

Soon I will move the Media Partition to a Dedicated drive so I can make it portable.

Barley any fragmentation, holes are probably the result of me burning CD's and deleting large files.

SETTINGS F:\

The Settings drive contains all my system drivers, and all the windows customized folders. It also contains the original install files for my essential windows programs, so I can restore my system without re-downloading or searching for CD's.

Inside the "F:\Settings" Folder is my Start Menu, Desktop, Temp files, History, Cookies, etc...

Keeping the off the main drive both keeps my harddrives defragmented and also keeps my setting incase of a system failure.

This drive does get very fragmented. It should, it contained all my temporary files.

This fragmentation would be on my main drive if it was not kept on a separate partition.

Even better would be make a Temporary Files only partition, speeding access to your Desktop and Startmenu.

GAMES G:\

Why of course only games live here.

Along with game updates/patches and such.

A little fragmentation, but not much.

Projects H:\

This drive contains valuable data about current projects.

Items such as Spec Sheets, Project Logs and Pictures, and Software needed to support these projects.

This also often becomes my junk folder for stuff I may need later.

Practically Zero Fragmentation

Kazaa I:\

This drive contains Kazaa Downloads in progress, nothing more.

Once a file is done downloading I either move it to another drive, or burn it to CD.

This drive gets full nearly every two weeks due to almost constant downloading.

MAJOR FRAGMENTATION!

But not a problem, all the files in there are only temporary anyways.

Plus it won't slow any of my other drives down.

Separating the drives will cut-down your fragmentation and significantly speed up your system.

Plus it is much harder for your system to become disorganized.
